Where Your Kids Should Do Their Homework

A common trend in schools today is that children are getting more and more homework. As the amount of work goes up, your kids’ efficiency has to go up as well, so that there is still time in the evenings for relaxation and family fun. With that in mind, you may be wondering what the best place is for your kids to do their homework. You want them to have ample room to spread out there work and you want them to have all the tools necessary to complete each task. In addition, you do not want them to be distracted by other people or entertainment options like a video game or television. Finally, you want to be close by so that you can supervise their progress and be available if they have questions. There may not be one place in your home that meets all of these criteria, but you need to weigh how important each requirement is to you and your kids to find the perfect homework place.

My personal preference for homework and even my work I bring home from my job is the breakfast nook. Round kitchen tables provide the perfect work surface because the kids can spread out but not be on top of each other while they work. In addition, I keep extra school supplies in the under the seat storage compartments in my breakfast nook benches. The kids never have to go far for extra pens, pencils, and paper. I even keep my laptop stored in one of the corner breakfast nook benches along with a power cord so that they can have internet access if they need it for a particular homework assignment. There are few distractions like television of video games, but they do have to contend with the noise I make while cooking dinner. However, I am close by if they have questions or concerns.

If your kids cannot handle the noise of a busy kitchen, then you might want to consider a computer desk in the living room or family room. Computer desks of course will have a computer which children will find more and more useful as they progress in school. Another advantage is that they are less likely to get papers dirty with scraps of food or drink. Make sure the computer desk is in a room where the television is not on so that they are not distracted and check on them often.

I think it is a bad idea to have your kids do their homework in their bedrooms because you will not be able to supervise them easily and they will be too easily distracted. In addition, the amount of time you will get to spend with your kids will be much less if they spend hours a night holed up in their rooms doing homework. Even if they are busy, it is nice to have them close by.
