Handmade Jewelry for the Kids

There are a lot of really cool projects for the kids at home or at school that relate to handmade jewelry. Handmade jewelry gets most of its publicity from professional artisans who design impeccable bead necklaces or someone who makes handmade rings and bracelets. But have you ever thought of incorporating a great kid’s project with handmade jewelry? Think about all the great handmade jewelry pieces you can help your kids design. Not only will most of them make a really creative jewelry piece, but the most important thing is the experience they will have of starting something and finishing it.

But how many of us actually know how to get ideas for a handmade jewelry project? Given the great resources on the Internet, you can simply search for the term “handmade jewelry project for kids” and you will be amazed at how many search results show up. But what if you want to come up with an original idea for your handmade jewelry project? Well, the first place to start is figuring out which type of handmade jewelry piece you want the kids to make. A necklace is always a good place to start because you simply need to begin with a string and some beads. Bracelets are also a good idea but you will ultimately have to size the bracelet to the child’s writs since one size does not fit all. You could make the same argument with a necklace, but the margin for error is much slimmer than a bracelet.

Depending on how many kids you have, you may want to take them to a craft store like Michael’s or Joanne Fabrics and let them pick out a few of their favorite beads for the necklace. This will give them a sense of ownership of the project since they will know from the start that they had a say in the materials being used for the project.
