Since its introduction in 2003, the California High School Exit Exam(CAHSEE) has had a huge impact on the landscape of high school education in the state of California. It has changed the way teachers teach and schools operate. Students who might otherwise be taking math classes like Geometry or Algebra 2 are instead being routed by counselors into CAHSEE math review classes which essentially re-hash all of the state content standards from grades 6-9. Is this really what we want from our public schools? On the one hand it is certainly important that students master the core academic concepts that are tested on the CAHSEE and trying to get all students to this minimum level is a worthwhile goal. However, the problem comes in the fact that success is now judged by how many students pass what realistically is an unchallenging test. Students who might have passed the exam without any review or special classes at all are losing out on valuable class time where they learning material that will help them excel in college. While the basics are certainly important, a student who only masters content up to a ninth grade level can never hope to compete on a level playing field with students who are taking advanced placement courses instead of CAHSEE review courses.

It should be a wake up call to all parties involved in the education of our youth that using the CAHSEE maintain a certain standard for high school graduates is fine but doing so at the expense of preparing kids for college is not. There needs to be a middle ground. Some sort of balance that will allow for counselors to continue enrolling students in challenging college preparatory classes while making sure that all students meet a minimum standard. There are several options available for schools that will help them achieve this goal. Many private companies offer online cahsee prep classes, which would allow valuable class time to be used for more challenging activities. Supplementing whats done in the classroom with resources available outside the classroom is one way that the everyone in education can make sure that the CAHSEE doesn’t do more harm than good.
