How to keep your family warm during winter outdoor fun

During the cooler months it’s always a challenge to keep everyone warm.  Mothers of course are constantly carrying children’s coats for little ones insisting that “it’s not cold” – whether it is or not!  Also there are many things to do outside in winter when you have a family… snow, frozen lakes, skiing, snowman building, hail, rain – all these things fascinating to children but how can we all keep ourselves farm amidst this fun?  Firstly it’s worth your money to get everyone a really decent and well-fitting coat.  If a coat is too bulky or pulls in the wrong places, the wearer is unlikely to want to wear it, and even an ill-fitting coat will still cost you a fair bit of money, so go that little bit extra and find the right coat for each family member.  Things to look for in a  good all-round coat are water-proof, wind-proof, simple to fasten/unfasten and a hood, preferably with a drawstring for little ones, to help the hood stay in place when they’re running about excitedly.  If you can find coats that are in appealing colours for the wearers, they will probably be more likely to get worn, too!  When I was a little child I can remember hating a particular coat I had, even though it was warm, because it was a horrid (or so I thought) shade of bright red.  I felt like I stood out in a really silly way, so you might want to keep that in mind when picking clothes for children – take them with you and let them find something that they like, too.  Otherwise, no matter how practical it is, it probably won’t get worn!

Layering is a good way to think about winter warmth.  Children grow fast, so it’s nice not to have to keep buying piles of new clothes, which can become expensive.  Instead of going for a whole new set of winter clothes, think about how you can layer clothing you already have, like using regular clothes over girls or boys thermal underwear.  A long sleeve top or regular jeans that are fine in spring and autumn will make great winter clothing too if you pair them with some kids thermal underwear.  You can also use the addition of thermal or woolen socks, long socks, leggings, mittens, scarves, and even funky arm-warmers – for children, who love to dress up in crazy colors, see if you can find some cute and snazzy socks, mittens and scarves.  A benefit of layering, especially with children (!) is that is anyone gets dirty, you can just peel off a layer and add another scarf or jumper! To me, the thermal underwear for kids is the key ingredient.

Working a Night Job

While working through the night sounds brutal to some, to others it’s a great way to make more money and manage family time better. Here are a few good things about working the night shift:

1. You’ll probably make a little more money than your daytime counterparts. Most companies will pay a percentage more for night work, usually anywhere from 5 to 20 percent.

2. You might be able to advance faster since there might be less competition.

3. If you want to learn more and develop in your profession, you might be able to focus more and get more done in a shift at night rather than a day shift. There are typically fewer meetings and less of a presence by the ‘higher ups’.

4. You might be able to swing more time with your family and potentially save on childcare.

5. There will be less traffic to deal with on the way to work if you’re heading in at an odd hour. This also means you’ll be off when most everyone else will be working, so errands are easier and the grocery store will be less crowded.

Here are a few survival tips:

1. When the weekend comes, try to get on your families schedule as soon as possible. It’ll be tough to stay up the first full day, but if you can swing it you’ll have more ‘normal’ time with them before Monday rolls around.

2. Eat normal healthy meals. It’s tempting to eat strange or unhealthy meals when you’re on a different schedule than everyone else. Try to eat a normal, healthy meal before your shift and bring healthy snacks with you.

3. Use black out curtains or blinds and stick to your normal sleep rituals no matter what time you go to bed.

4. Try not to withdraw from normal life activities just because your schedule is different than everyone else’s. Make time for friends, regular exercise and family activities.

Weight Loss Tips That Have Made All the Difference

As with most people, I have tried many diets. It really takes a lot of motivation to stay on a diet, especially in the first several days as your body adjusts to a different eating style. Some things that have helped my weight loss motivation are the following weight loss tips:

1.   Discuss with your family that you are trying to lose weight and what goals you have set in your weight loss plan. Especially if you are married, this will let your spouse know that you may not be eating everything that is prepared.

2.   Let your family know what foods you would like to eat. If someone else is preparing the food, this gives them an idea of what dishes to prepare. If there are some food items not on your plan, then this also lets them know that they may not have to cook as many portions as they did before.

3.   Discuss with your family about who is going to prepare the foods you need. I know in my house, if I go on a diet, I quickly offer to prepare my own dishes so it does not limit the options for the rest of the family to eat. Often, my spouse does go ahead and prepare many of my food choices, but it is at least courteous to offer to prepare your own diet foods.

Why does this provide weight loss motivation? I have discovered that if I lay out my goals from the start, it helps me stick to the plan because if I don’t, everyone knows that I am going off my diet. This will either prompt one of two responses, both of which motivate me: my family will either chide me for not having the will power to stay on my diet, or they will see my slipping in my will power and encourage me to stick to the course.

I hope these weight loss tips have proved useful to you in your weight loss plans.

Video Games for Learning

Video games often get a bad wrap mainly because of their addictive nature. They are designed to be addictive, fun to play, and hard to put down. I think that the developers have done a pretty good job at achieving their goal.

I would like to discuss an aspect of video games that parents rarely consider when bantering at their kids to put down the video game controllers. These games actually teach some pretty important lessons and help with the development of important skills.

Hand eye coordination is one important aspect of development that is often overlooked and that video games do an excellent job at developing. With the increasing interactivity of games and the complexity of controls the coordination required to play these games continues to increase.

Many video games contain numerous opportunities for math, reading, and even science. The game plots often require a fair amount of reading and navigation through the game can often require management of points or money which can develop mathematical skills.

Educational Video games are also becoming more and more interactive. It is now possible for kids to play internet based video games with numerous people from all over the world. These games often require team work and communication which allows these games to not be considered an isolationist activity.

The military recently purchased hundreds of video game consoles for training. In the past the military and other entities have used simulators for training purposes. The days of these high dollar simulators may not be coming to an end but the sophistication of the new breeds of video game consoles allows for many training opportunities.

So, parents next time you banter at your kids to get off of the video game system consider what benefit they may be getting from the play the are engaged in. The video game can be used as an excellent source of home school software or it can be an addictive nuisance. It is up to you the parent to decide which it will be.

Fun With Finger Shadow Figures

Have you ever been to a party and known someone who entertained the children by doing finger shadows on the wall.  It was very interesting and fun for the children.  I remember them laughing and having a good time as simple and more complex shadows were done.  Have you ever wondered how to do finger shadow puppets.

There are probably many different ways and methods to making the finger shadow figures.  You will need to practice and try different things.  The best thing to do is to be in a dark room with a flashlight shining on a wall.  Then put your hands between the flashlight and the wall.

One simple figure to make is a rabbit.  For instance, you could have your palms be flat and cross your wrists in the form of an X.  Reach your right hand little finger around and wrap around the left hand little finger.  You will then wrap your two index fingers together.  You left thumb will be used to be the rabbit’s feet while your right hand middle two fingers will be the rabbit’s ears.  Use your left hand fingers as its hands.  Reach your right hand thumb up and lay it next to your left hand index finger so it is not flapping around and ruining the effect.  Now you can wiggle your right hand middle two fingers and imitate the movement of the rabbit’s ears.

Another way to make a rabbit is to make a loose fist with your fingers.  Make a peace sign with your index and middle finger.  You can make the mouth with your folded fingers.  Work with this one to make sure it is right.

To make a shadow dog you should put your hands up as if in a prayer position.  You should then part your little fingers away from the rest of the hand to make the bottom jaw of the dog.  You can then bend your left pointer finger a little to form the dog’s eye.  Cross your thumbs and point them upward to make the dog’s ears.

There are many other different things you can co to have fun with finger shadow figures.  Your imagination and practice are the only things needed to make you a great entertainer.  So take some time to practice and the next time the power goes out and you are wondering how to keep the children from being scared, pull out your fingers and have some fun.

Baby Bedding in all Shapes and Sizes

If you’re a mom to be you probably have a general idea of all the products that are available for babies. While many of these products are wonderful they are not all necessary. There are actually only a few things that are absolutely necessary, and one of these is a place for your baby to sleep.

Many parents choose to have their baby sleep with them. If however, that is not your choice, some type of bed will be needed. You can choose to use a cradle or bassinet or Moses basket with your newborn, and then switch to a crib as your baby gets older. Many times you may be able to borrow a cradle, bassinet, or Moses basket from a family member or friend since babies use these items for such a short amount of time.

No matter what type of bed is used, you also need bedding for your baby. You will find that the choices in bedding are endless. Whether you’re looking for crib bedding for your baby girl or cradle bedding for your baby boy, there are lots of beautiful options. Solids, stripes, dots, or abstract prints are just the few of the many fabric choices you will find.

Then there’s the whole variety of themed bedding. From bunny rabbits to fire trucks to monkeys to dragonflies, themed bedding choices abound. For boys, vehicle themed choices like fire trucks and animal themed choices such as farm baby crib bedding are always popular choices. While it may seem strange to choose bugs as a theme for little girls room, ladybugs and dragonflies are popular themes for little girls.

While bedding is necessary, do not purchase bedding until you have made the decision on where your baby will sleep. Bassinets, cradles and Moses baskets will require different sizes of bedding. Some cribs, such as round cribs, will also require specialty bedding. What ever your choice for your baby’s sleeping area, there will be many baby bedding sets to choose from.
